THE NEW police chief for Derry and the North West region has been unveiled today.
Stephen Cargin has now been appointed as the Commander for G District, which takes in the Foyle, Strabane, Limavady and Magherafelt areas.
He will be joined at the helm by two new Superintendants, Gary Eaton and John Magill.
Chief Superintendant Cargin has 23 years experience in the G District area and said he has seen “tremendous change” since he was working in Derry in the 1980s.
Speaking just after the announcement at Strand Road PSNI Station this morning, he said: “The biggest change is that in the past we would have policed the community, whereas now we police with the community.
“There are greater opportunities now for partnership.
“A lot of the conversations we have with communities can be challenging but the fact that we enjoy a greater level of support, talk to people who would have been in the past our enemies, that is a testimony to where we are in terms of policing.”
Mr Cargin also paid tribute to his predecessor in the job Stephen Martin, who left several months ago after being promoted to Assistant Chief Constable.
