The village of Newbuildings is celebrating the completion and recent opening of a new Multi-Use Games Area, the £300,000 investment includes a state of the art 3G synthetic all-weather games and training pitch which will benefit both residents and communities throughout the area.

The project was supported by Derry City Council’s Park Development Programme with funding from Axis 3 of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme (2007-2013) administered locally by ARC north west.

Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly said the completion of the work was good news for the area and the city as a whole. “This is a great example of successful partnership working between Local and Central Government, Statutory Agencies and local groups to bring about much needed recreational sports and leisure facilities in this area. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this successful multi party arrangement on successfully developing an under-utilised space for the benefit of the whole community in such a short turnaround time.”

Speaking on behalf of the ARC north west Local Action Group and Joint Council Committee Councillor Allan Rainey MBE said: “I am delighted to return to Newbuildings just over three months since I was last here and to witness first-hand the difference the investment has made. Where there was once an under-utilised space now stands a new facility which the whole community can benefit from.”

Extending his congratulations to all involved he added “It is extremely rewarding to be associated with the Rural Development Programme and to see projects such as this one once described on paper brought to life.”

Gordon Moore, Chairman of Newbuildings Community and Environmental Association said the community was delighted with the completion of the facilities in time for the beginning of summer.

“Delivering a much needed addition to the existing facilities in this area, the local community and schools in the Newbuildings area will get great use from this facility, encouraging a greater participation in outdoor sport and exercise. The use in not limited to the school children, but will also encourage a healthier, active lifestyle for people of all ages. This MUGA will allow increased accessibility for people at different days and especially throughout the long summer evenings. This facility will go a long way to strengthen the sense of pride in an already in this community orientated area.”

Newbuildings is a one of a number of villages across the four Council areas of Derry, Limavady, Omagh and Strabane receiving financial assistance from ARC north west through the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 towards a range of village renewal projects.
