A Buncrana hair stylist has been creating waves across the world with her original creations.
In the past few weeks, Tara Henderson has won the All-Ireland Championship and placed an impressive 11th out of over 100 finalists in the OMC World Championships in Germany.
The 22-year-old travelled to Frankfurt as part of Steve Jones and Ken McClure’s Northern Ireland team. Her piece, which channelled a ‘Pearl Queen,’ was made entirely from hair. This was dyed and moulded into shape and enhanced with rhinestones.
Tara spent “months” on the piece and was “delighted” at her placing in the championship’s Senior Ladies’ Fantasy section.
The event is dubbed the ‘Hair Olympics’ and takes place every two years. Hair stylists from approximately 50 countries around the world take part. Tara placed seventh in the 2012 competition in Milan.
She described the experience as “unbelievable and overwhelming.”
“The standard of work there was amazing and gave me so many ideas,” she said.
This year’s event was Tara’s first time modelling her creation, which she described as “interesting.”
“I have always brought a model before. The piece was heavy enough, so it was an experience wearing it for a good part of the day.” she quipped.
Tara revealed she was “over the moon” with her placing in the competition, which came just a month after her biggest win so far, the All Ireland Senior Ladies’ Hair Championship.
She won the overall top prize, something she has been working towards for a number of years.
Tara said she would continue to take part in competitions and her dream is to win gold in the world championships.
She said: “Nobody in Ireland has ever got the gold medal. My dream is to do this and I’m going to keep on entering. I love all the categories, but I think the fantasy category is my favourite. There’s no limit. Anything you can imagine, you can create.”
