A Buncrana hair stylist has been creating waves across the world with her creations.

Over the past few weeks, 22-year-old Tara Henderson has won the All-Ireland Championship and placed an impressive 11th out of over 100 finalists in the OMC World Championships in Germany.

Tara travelled to the competition as part of the Northern Ireland team. Her piece, which channelled a ‘Pearl Queen,’ was made entirely from hair. This was dyed and moulded into shape and enhanced with rhinestones.

Tara spent “months” on the piece and was “delighted” at her placing in the championship’s Senior Ladies’ Fantasy section.

The event is dubbed the ‘Hair Olympics’ and takes place every two years. Hair stylists from approximately 50 countries around the world take part. Tara placed seventh in the 2012 competition in Milan.

She described the experience as “unbelievable and overwhelming.”

“The standard of work there was amazing and gave me so many ideas,” she said.

This year’s event was Tara’s first time modelling her creation, which she described as “interesting.”

“I have always brought a model before, The piece was heavy enough, so it was an experience wearing it for a good part of the day. I know what my models go through now,” she quipped.

Tara revealed she was “over the moon” with her placing in the competition, which came just a month after her biggest win so far, the All Ireland Senior Ladies’ Hair Championship.

She won the overall top prize in that competition, something she has been working towards for a number of years.

Additionally, Daryl McKinney, a stylist from Tara’s salon, also won the Gents’ Championship. This was the first time a salon had won both categories.

Tara, who has also won competitions in the UK, Scotland and Europe, said she was “very grateful” for the support of her clients and the stylists in her salon.

She said she would continue to take part in competitions. Her dream is to win gold in the world championships.

She said: “Nobody in Ireland has ever got the gold medal. My dream is to do this and I’m going to keep on entering these competitions. I love all the categories, but I think the fantasy category is my favourite. There’s no limit to what you can do. Anything you can imagine, you can create.”
