One of the city’s best known youth programmes is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and organisers are calling on young people from all over Derry to get involved.

The popular Redshirts Active Youth Citizenship programme has been a stepping stone for many teenagers who have picked up vital skills during their summer holidays and gone on to excel in numerous other projects.

Marty McGranaghan, Youth Support Worker for the Outer North area, who has been involved in the programme since it first began, has said applications are now open for young people aged 14 to 24.

“Every year the Redshirts gets better and better and seeing the young people from our city getting to first hand experience of working on community projects and festivals really shows our youth in a positive Light. We know for a fact that young people who’ve taken part in our project and engaged with their local communities have gained major confidence boosts in the process.

“A lot of our young Redshirts have moved on to become teachers, youth workers, community leaders and coming up to our tenth anniversary we’re looking forward to seeing the next generation of young people getting involved. Over the past ten years hundreds of young people have taken part in the Redshirt programme and the programme is widely recognised and respected right across the community.

“This year, teenagers from across the city will be taking a lead role in the Earhart festival which is moving back to its original location in Galliagh and which is due to take place from July 11 - July 20th.”

The local youth worker added: “I’m delighted to have been involved with the project for so long and to have been able to see our young people grow and move onto to bigger things after taking part in the Redshirts programme.”
