Council offers fire evacuees shelter at leisure centre

Derry City Council have confirmed that they will offer those evacuated from their homes this afternoon as a result of a major fire in Derry city centre shelter at Brooke Park Leisure Centre.

The fire at the Mandarin Palace restaurant at Queen’s Quay in the city took hold at appromixately 1pm and was quickly declared a ‘major incident’ by the fire service.

At one stage eight fire appliances and over fifty fire fighting personnel were in attedance at the scene. Large scale traffic disruption was caused across the city as a result.
