Council tribute for Ryan McBride and Buncrana pier tragedy victims tonight

Derry City and Strabane District Council's Strand Road building in Derry is due to be lit up red tonight as a mark of respect for late Derry City FC captain Ryan McBride.

A flood of tributes have been pouring in from across Ireland and beyond after Ryan died suddenly on Sunday night.

The move by the Council will also mark the first anniversary of the Buncrana Pier Tragedy in which five local people lost their lives.

Ruth Daniels, her daughter Jodie-lee Tracey, son-in-law Sean McGrotty and his children Mark and Evan, all lost their lives in the tragedy, which unfolded on March 20, 2016.

Meanwhile the Council have confirmed that the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival launch scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 21 March, has now been cancelled.

A Council spokesperson said that the decision was taken “as a mark of respect following the sudden death last night of Derry City FC captain Ryan McBride”.
