Apologised for behaviour

A 19 year old Derry woman who became abusive towards police and staff at Altnagelvin Hospital has apologised for her behaviour.

The city’s Magistrates Court heard on Friday how Ciara O’Brien of Windridge Drive had come to police attention after she attempted to jump into the River Foyle in the early hours of June 6.

Police escorted O’Brien to the hospital where she tried to leave on several occasions and began shouting and screaming.

When she was approached by a staff member and asked to calm down, she laughed in the nurse’s face.

Police warned her about her behaviour and she told them to “f*** off”.

She was subsequently arrested. A defence solicitor for O’Brien said that his client totally accepted that her behaviour was unacceptable and that those she was abusive towards had been trying to help her.

He said the 19 year old wished to apologise for her behaviour and knew that she had to address her issues surrounding alcohol. District Judge Barney McElholm said O’Brien was lucky to have avoided a custodial sentence. She was given six months probation - a condition of which being that she completes an alcohol programme.
