A woman who assaulted a taxi driver after one of her friends threw up in his taxi has been given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £200 compensation.
Lisa McColgan, of Drumkeen Park, pleaded guilty to assault and making off without paying on October 5, last year.
Derry Magistrate’s Court was told the 23-year-old was one of four people who got into the taxi and asked to be taken to a city centre bar.
On the way there, one of the passengers vomited in the taxi. Everyone got out and the taxi driver was assaulted by two of the passengers. They then made off without paying the £5 taxi fare.
McColgan was arrested and during police interview admitted she had pushed the driver a couple of times, but claimed this was a reaction to his aggressive behaviour, and didn’t realise the fare had not been paid. Imposing the penalties, District Judge Barney McElholm said there is “no doubt this man’s taxi was out of action for the rest of the night”.
