'˜Buffoon' shouted racist abuse at 77-year-old woman

A '˜stupid, uneducated buffoon' who made a racist comment to a 77-year-old woman has been warned he may be sent to prison.

Jordan Hazlett, whose address was given on court papers as c/o Hydebank, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on June 19, last year.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 21-year-old was on the Strand Road when he shouted racial abuse at the woman. He called the woman a ‘Paki b******’ and this was witnessed by police.

Adjourning sentencing for a probation report, District Judge Barney McElholm said racist comments were commonly made by ‘stupid, uneducated buffoons’ like Hazlett.

He added the woman was not even of Pakistani origin but ‘that doesn’t matter to him’ because he ‘jumped to conclusions like all other ignorant racists’.

Hazlett will appear in court again on April 8.
