A staff member gave chase after the chemist shop she works at was robbed, a court has heard.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the claims as Elaine Donna Bradley and David Anthony Comiskey, both aged 41, appeared in the dock yesterday.
The court heard allegations the staff member ‘tackled’ Bradley to the ground, however returned to the chemist’s when the 41-year-old female produced a hammer.
An investigating officer said police received numerous reports of a man “running around armed with a knife in the area” and both defendants were arrested a short time later.
Opposing bail, the officer revealed Bradley of Altcar Park, has 126 previous convictions and Comiskey, of Chamberlain Street has 72. Police believe they should be remanded in custody “in the interest of maintaining public safety”.
The officer said the owner of the chemist, a man in his 80s, and his staff are “terrified” of the defendants returning to the business.
Refusing bail, District Judge Barney McElholm said he would be “putting the public at risk of further offences if I was to release them.” The accused will appear in court again on Feburary 7.
