A man who assaulted a barman at a city centre bar has been ordered to complete 180 hours community service.
John Kieran Patrick Coyle, of Northland Road, pleaded guilty to common assault and assaulting police on November 9, last year.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 39-year-old punched the barman after he was asked to leave the Ice Wharf.
The injured party was left with a cut to his mouth as a result. When police arrived, Coyle attempted to headbutt an officer.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client had been drinking all day prior to the assault and has no recollection of it.
District Judge Barney McElholm said he was concerned Coyle had shown little or no remorse for his actions because he doesn’t know the victim, “so why feel sorry for him?”.
The judge said this is “not a particularly human attitude to take” and ordered Coyle to pay £250 compensation to the injured party.
