Drug accused given '˜last chance' to abide by bail conditions

Martin McShane, of Dunfield Terrace, is further charged with attempted possession of Diazepam with intent to supply and attempted possession of the Class C drug.

The charges relate to the alleged seizure of 1,400 Diazepam tablets on May 5. It is alleged they were posted to the defendant.

Opposing bail, an investigating officer told Derry Magistrate’s Court these offences were allegedly committed eight days after McShane was convicted of other drug charges. He said the 40-year-old has a history of breaching court orders and police don’t believe that any bail conditions can prevent him from re-offending.

Defence solicitor Don Mahoney said his client has sought help for his drug addiction whilst in prison and is now completely drug free.

He urged the court to allow McShane an opportunity to prove this.

District Judge Barney McElholm said he would give McShane a chance ‘but if he throws it back in my face it will be the last chance he gets’

McShane was released with a number of conditions to reside at an address in Carnhill. He will appear in court again next month.
