Drug accused released on bail

Kyle Thomas Christopher McGuinness, of Cornshell Fields, was charged with being concerned in the supply of cannabis and diazepam.

He is further charged with possessing diazepam with intent to supply and obstructing police powers to search for drugs on June 3, last year.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard allegations that police searched a property on the Racecourse Road and McGuinness ran past the officers.

He was allagedly seen throwing something into a bin and it was later found to be 80 yellow tablets. These were split into eight small bags.

A further two bags of diazepam were found in the toilet and a quantity of cannabis was found.

The 23-year-old’s phone was seized and it is alleged it contains ‘strong evidence’ he was supplying drugs.

During interview, McGuinness claimed the drugs were for personal use.

He also claimed he did not know diazepam was illegal because it can be bought on the internet.

Police opposed bail for fear of further offences because McGuinness was a ‘heavy drug user’.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client had been drug free for the last seven months and had not come to the attention of police.

McGuinness was released on bail with a number of conditions to appear in court again on August 11.
