'˜Father Ted' actor is remanded on bail

An Irish actor has been remanded on bail after appearing at Carndonagh District Court on foot of a bench warrant.

Gerard McSorley, Cul na Toinne, Magherclogher, Bunbeg, appeared at court in Carndonagh on Tuesday, July 19th after failing to appear at Dungloe District Court on July 12th.

McSorley, who has appeared in a number of plays and films and is well known for roles in ‘Angela’s Ashes,’ ‘In the Name of the Father’ and as as Fr Todd Uncious on the sitcom ‘Father Ted,’ is charged with damaging two flower pots at Bank of Ireland, Bunbeg on June 16th.

Garda McBride, Letterkenny Garda Station, told the court he arrested McSorley on Ramelton Road at 10.40am on Tuesday morning on foot of a bench warrant. He made an application to remand McSorley to Dungloe District Court on September 13th. There was no objection to bail.

McSorley stood with his eyes closed as the Garda gave evidence. When Judge Kelly asked if he was “alright.” McSorley replied he had a “very painful knee.”

Judge Paul Kelly remanded McSorley on his own bond of 100 euro and assigned a solicitor to the case. McSorley told Judge Kelly he had not been aware he was due to appear in Dungloe District Court on July 12th.
