Police intervened and restrained Grant, who became absuive and struggled with the officers.

The female identified herself as Grant’s girlfriend and said she dd not wish to make a complaint. The defendant was arrested and continued to struggle with police.

He was initially charged with assaulting his girlfriend, but this was withdrawn.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said his client has a dependency on alcohol and ‘as a result he has found himself in contact with police very frequently’.

Jailing Grant for six months, District Judge Barney McElholm said while the assault charge ‘has gone it does not absolve him totally. The police saw what they saw’.

The judge added that the 24-year-old needs to do something about his ‘anger and attitude to putting his hands on women’.

He then warned ‘if he continues to assault women I will continue to jail him’.
