A man who hit a police officer in the face has received a suspended jail term.
Matthew Robert McDaid, of Capall Court, pleaded guilty to two assaults on police, disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest.
The charges relate to an incident on the Strand Road on January 8.
Derry Magistrates Court heard the 21-year-old was having an argument with his girlfriend when police arrived in the area.
McDaid became abusive and told the officers to ‘f*** off’. The 21-year-old attempted to walk off and when police stopped him, he attempted to strike an officer.
He was arrested and during the arrest hit an officer in the face.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told the court his client is ‘deeply ashamed’ of his behaviour and apologised to the officers.
Suspending a three month jail term for two years, District Judge Barney McElholm ordered McDaid to pay £100 compensation to the police officer.
