Homeless man smashed window in hostel

A homeless man who broke a window at a hostel has received a suspended jail sentence.

Damien Moore, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to criminal damage on April 20. The offence was committed in the House in the Wells.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard hostel staff called police to request assistance with the 29-year-old.

As officers were speaking with staff, Moore became aggressive and ‘unreasonable’.

He punched one of the windows causing it to smash.

Defence solicitor, Seamus Quigley, said his client had very little memory of the incident because he was intoxicated.

Suspending a three month jail sentence for 12 months, District Judge Barney McElholm also ordered the 29-year-old to pay £200 compensation.
