Jailed for assaulting and resisting police

A man who attempted to spit at police after he was arrested for breaching bail has been jailed.

Jeffrey Peter Harkin, of Fern Park, pleaded guilty to assaulting and resisting police on December 22, last year.

The 46-year-old also admitted breaching a non-molestation order in March.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard Harkin was on bail for unrelated matters and police went to his home to check that he was observing the conditions.

However, Harkin was highly intoxicated and was arrested.

The defendant became aggressive, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth.

He attempted to spit at an officer as he drove the police car and lunged forward aggressively, stating ‘I’m going to get you, who the f*** do you think you are?’

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman told the court his client has been in custody since March and accepted he would receive a custodial sentence.

Harkin was jailed for seven months.
