Jailed for assaulting two police officers

A man who assaulted two police officers because he was in breach of his bail conditions has been jailed for four months.

James Gerald Donegan, of Carnhill, pleaded guilty to assault on police, criminal damage, resisting and obstructing police on October 4 last year.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard that police went to the 25-year-old’s home to carry out a bail check and he had been drinking alcohol in breach of his conditions. Donegan struggled with police and assaulted both a male and female officer as they tried to arrest him. The court heard he dragged the female officer along the ground and she sustained cuts and bruises to her legs and damage to her uniform as a result.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said Donegan recognised the consequences of breaching his bail and that was why he lashed out.
