Jailed for stealing electronic tag

A 25-year-old who cut off his electronic tag has been jailed for one month.

Declan Noel Grimes, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to theft of the tag from G4S on December 27, last year.

He also admitted obstructing police on August 7.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard Grimes entered the enquiry office of Strand Road Police Station and said he was in breach of bail.

He admitted he had removed his electronic and didn’t have it.

In relation to the obstruction, the court heard Grimes was the driver of a vehicle stopped by police in the Irish Street area.

When the officers went to search the car Grimes took off and could not be located.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client ‘had enough manners to walk into the police station’ and admit he had breached bail.

He said the defendant was not in rbeach of any suspended sentence or court order.

Grimes was jailed for one month and ordered to pay £279 compensation.
