A 20-year-old man has appeared in court accused of attempting to choke his girlfriend.

Jamie Lee Campbell, of Beaufort Drive, faces one charge of attempted choking with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on July 18.

Derry Magistrates Court heard allegations Campbell was verbally abusive to his girlfriend before he put his hands around her neck.

He allegedly told her ‘I am going to f****** kill you’ and made it difficult for her to breathe.

Young children were in the house at the time of the alleged incident. The court heard claims Campbell left the house and was arrested when he returned.

Opposing bail, an investigating officer told the court police fear the 20-year-old would not adhere to bail conditions and has breached bail in the past.

He added that police have concerns Campbell would continue to contact the alleged injured party.

A defence barrister told the court his client has a history of mental health issues and has come to police attention before because his girlfriend was ‘worried about him rather than the assaults on her’.

He added the 20-year-old has a supportive family and the proposed bail address would be with them.

District Judge Des Perry refused bail stating Campbell is not a suitable candidate for bail because of past breaches.

Campbell was remanded in custody until August 14.
