A man who stole a three litre bottle of vodka from an off-licence has received a suspended jail term.
Damien Martin Murphy, of Ederowen Park, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft on June 18, last year.
Derry Magistrates Court heard the 30-year-old stole the bottle of vodka, worth over £60, from a window display of a city centre off-licence.
He reached over the counter to grab the bottle after asking the shop assistant for a tissue and then ran off.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told the court his client was very drunk at the time. He added the theft was ‘opportunistic’ and not planned.
District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a four month jail term for two years and ordered Murphy to pay £66 compensation.
