A man who stole alcohol from a Waterside off-licence has been jailed for six months.
Derek William Creswell, whose address was given on court papers as Strand Road, pleaded guilty to the theft of two boxes of beer worth almost £20.
The 21-year-old committed the offence one day after he was given a suspended sentence for stealing a bottle of vodka.
Derry Magistrates Court heard that three men went into an off licence at Clooney Terrace, and stole two boxes of beer. They then ran off in the direction of Strand Road.
CCTV was viewed and Creswell was identified by police.
Defence solicitor Michael McGee told the court his client lives an ‘unhappy existence’ and commits offences when drunk.
He added that Creswell steals the alcohol to continue drinking.
Mr McGee added that the ‘short, sharp shock’ of custody will hopefully break Creswell’s cycle of offending.
District Judge Barney McElholm jailed the 21-year-old for a total of six months.
A co-accused, Raymond Anthony Lishman, of Castle Street, was refused bail by the court. He was jointly charged with Creswell of the theft on March 11.
The 24-year-old was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on April 3.
