A 22-year-old man shouted obscenities at a local judge after he was refused bail.
Ryan Michael Harkin, of Rockmills, is charged with theft of a nappy bag from a car in the Victoria Gate area of the Waterside and going equipped for theft with a torch on August 18.
Derry Magistrates Court heard allegations that an eye witness saw a man lifting a bag out of a neighbour’s car in the early hours of the morning.
He was dressed in dark clothing, wearing tracksuit bottoms with white piping and shining a blue torch.
Police were called and as they made their way along Victoria Road they saw Harkin allegedly wearing similar clothing.
During police interview, Harkin denied involvement in the theft and claimed he had been in Prehen visiting a friend.
However, the court heard that Harkin refused to give police any further details of this friend.
An investigating officer said police are ‘strongly opposed’ to bail.
He said police fear there is a high likelihood of re-offending, the 22-year-old is likely to breach bail and not surrender to the court.
District Judge Barney McElholm refused bail stating he had ‘no confidence’ Harkin would abide by bail conditions and he is a ‘bit old to be inventing imaginary friends’.
Harkin banged his head off the dock and shouted obscenities at the judge when he was refused bail.
He apologised for his behaviour a short time later and the judge said he would like to consider the case.
The 22-year-old was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink later today.
