Judge Philpott was appointed as a county court judge in 1998 and became Recorder of Derry in 2002.

Judges, solicitors, barristers and court clerks were gathered together on Friday morning by the current Recorder, Judge Philip Babington, to be informed of the news.

Judge Babington paid tribute to Judge Philpott who, he said, ‘lived for this city and its people’.

He said Judge Philpott ‘always fought for this city behind the scenes to ensure proper judicial cover and proper court sittings.’

He revealed that she had been honoured with the Freedom of the City of London as a result of the work she did with the Irish Society and the then Recorder of London.

Judge Babington said his colleague had been ‘struck down’ by a ‘terrible illness’ which she had borne with ‘great, and typical, bravery and determination’.

He expressed his condolences to Judge Philpott’s family and observed a moment’s silence.
