Three men arrested in connection with a shooting in Derry earlier this week have been released unconditionally.

The three men, aged 19, 31 and 59, were arrested in Derry during separate operations over the past few days, but were released from police custody on Friday evening.

A 23-year-old is today still recovering after being shot in the leg at a bookmakers’ shop in the Central Drive area of Creggan on Monday.

On Thursday, Sinn Fein Councillor Kevin Campbell said there have been reports on social media that the man shot at the Creggan shops was a “case of mistaken identity”.

Colr. Campbell spoke out in condemnation of the shooting at the Full Council’s monthly meeting in the Guildhall on Thursday.

Colr. Campbell said the young man had been playing football in the area prior to the attack.

The Councillor said he had witnessed the aftermath of the attack in person, and that the man’s family had been left traumatised.

He said that information from social media suggested this was a case of mistaken identity.

“I think that is an absolute disgrace,” he said.
