Accused of assaulting man with hammer

A 42-year-old man has appeared in court accused of assaulting a man with a hammer.

Stephen Tracey, whose address was given on court papers as Bentley Terrace, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent on November 17.

He is further charged with possessing a hammer and scissors.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the alleged incident occurred in the defendant’s home in the Glenvale Park area.

The alleged victim is the brother of Tracey’s partner.

It is further alleged Tracey stabbed the victim five times in the head.

However, he claimed that he assaulted the man in self defence.

The 42-year-old was released on his own bail of £1,000, to live at an address in Maydown. He was also banned from entering the Waterside beyond Caw Roundabout and from having contact with alleged injured party.

Tracey will appear in court again in January.
