A 44-year-old man has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder his wife.

Thomas Fitzgerald O’Reilly, of Munalohug Road, Dungiven, is charged with attempting to murder his wife on November 11.

Derry Magistrates Court heard allegations there had been a long history of domestic violence which had never been reported to police.

In the early hours of Monday morning O’Reilly allegedly tried to stab his wife, suffocate her and snap her neck.

The 44-year-old is further charged with assaulting his 16-year-old son who tried to intervene in the alleged incident.

Bail was refused by District Judge Barney McElholm for fear of further offences.

He said that while O’Reilly had no previous convictions he is accused of making “concerted and repeated efforts” to kill his wife.

The judge said there is “too great a risk” of further offences and the 44-year-old is not a suitable candidate for bail. He was remanded in custody until December 5.
