A man with almost 300 convictions was arrested hours after he was released from prison, a court has heard.

Damien Joseph Young, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to criminal damage on April 17. Derry Magistrates Court heard the 48-year-old was released from custody earlier that day, after serving a prison sentence.

He had been back in the city less than two hours when he caused damage to the window of a local cafe.

It is alleged he went in and ordered food and the cafe were good enough to feed him, even though he had no money to pay for it. Young began taking food from other customers plates and he was asked to leave the cafe. The court heard he then broke a window. It was revealed the 48-year-old was given a prison sentence for a similar incident at this cafe in the past. District Judge Peter King refused bail for fear of further offences. Young was remanded in custody to appear in court again on May 14.
