A man who assaulted a good samaritan has been jailed for three months.
Michael Ward, of Drumleck Drive, pleaded guilty to common assault on October 14, last year.
Derry Magistrates Court heard the 20-year-old was with others who were banging the windows of a shop in the Sackville Street area and shouting abuse at a shop worker. A man came to her assistance and he was punched around the head. Ward punched the man at least once. The injured party sustained bruising and swelling to the face as a result of the assault.
Jailing Ward, District Judge Barney McElholm said it was an “absolutely disgraceful attack on a good samaritan” who was helping a woman because “thugs were abusing and threatening her”.
