Police in Derry are appealing for information about an attempted armed robbery at a local bookmaker’s office.

The incident took place on Thursday at around 5.45 p.m. at the premises at Blucher Street in the Bogside.

Detective Inspector Conor McStravick said: “Initially, the man tried to force open an amusement machine and then demanded money from staff. When told there was none, he tried to steal a television monitor from the wall.

“During this time, the man was armed with a hammer. However, no one was hurt.”

The man is described as being in his 30s and of a slim build. He was wearing a balaclava and a dark grey rain jacket, with the hood up, and navy bottoms.

Anyone who saw the man in the area is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road. Information can be given on the police non-emergency number, 101, or by calling the Crimestoppers Charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
