Bail varied in intimidation case

A Strabane woman accused of intimidating a witness has had her bail varied to allow her to enter Derry.

Alison Hewitt, of Patterson Park in the town, is accused of intimidating the witness last December during a crown court trial for theft.

The 27-year-old was convicted of the charge and was jailed for three months, a decision which caused outrage among local politicians and human rights groups.

As part of her bail conditions, Hewitt had been banned from entering Derry except to appear in court.

However, earlier this week District Judge Barney McElholm varied this condition to allow her to go to a hairdressing supply shop on the Strand Road once a month.

Hewitt will appear in court again on June 9.
