A 38-year-old man who went ‘berserk’ in a city centre housing estate has been fined £600.

Gavin Downey, with an address in Dunamanagh, pleaded guilty to common assault, disorderly behaviour and criminal damage on July 19.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard Downey was standing in the middle of The Fountain shouting and swearing at residents.

He was topless and highly intoxicated.

A resident then reported that the 38-year-old had caused damage to her front door and had assaulted her brother. He allegedly grabbed the injured party by the throat and kicked him on the back.

A defence solicitor told the court his client is ‘highly embarrassed’ by his behaviour.

He urged the court to treat this incident as a one off and handed character references into the court.

Fining Downey, District Judge Barney McElholm also ordered him to pay £400 compensation to the injured parties.
