A bomb has exploded as army technical officers tried to make it safe outside the home of a police officer in Derry.
A PSNI spokesperson has just confirmed that the bomb exploded at Ardnalee in the Culmore area this afternoon.
It is not yet known if there are any injuries.
A PSNI spokeswoman said: “We can confirm the device exploded as ATO were in the process of making it safe.”
Police confirmed this morning that a suspicious object was found in the area and was currently being investigated.
A number of homes have been evacuated from the area.
Those behind the device in Culmore have “nothing to offer the community,” Sinn Fein’s Elisha McCallion warned earlier.
She said: “There’s no support for these types of action in our community and those responsible have to stop immediately.
“Residents have been evacuated from their homes.
“Those behind this security alert have nothing to offer the local community.
“We don’t need or want these type of incidents happening in our city.”
