In a bid to prevent oil thefts, Limavady police are working with a number of local companies to raise awareness among homeowners about how to protect their oil tanks.

As part of the ‘Safe & Secure Together’ campaign leaflets detailing safety advice will be delivered by the companies involved to homes as part of their delivery service.

Crime Prevention Officer Rumena McCabe said oil thefts hits the most vulnerable in society who often struggle to meet rising fuel costs.

“On many occasions, vehicles will be used to transport oil and if you notice a vehicle which looks out of place or not quite right, please contact us immediately. We would rather investigate something which may appear to be insignificant than miss the opportunity to catch a criminal in the act,” said Ms McCabe, adding: “This is a particularly timely campaign given that we are coming into the colder months and more people will be placing oil orders.”

David Blevings, Northern Ireland Oil Federation said simple precautions such as making a regular note of oil levels helps to prevent thefts.
