Cops probe school lead theft report

Police are appealing for information after they received a report of lead being stolen from a derelict school roof in Dungiven.

At approximately 4pm on Sunday police received a report “that youths were stealing lead from a school roof” in the Chapel Road area of Dungiven.

“Police attended and spoke to two 15-year-old males, each in the presence of an appropriate adult,” said a PSNI spokesperson. “Enquiries into this incident remain ongoing.”

A spokesperson for the WELB said: “The incident is currently being investigated by the appropriate authorities and the Board cannot make any further comment at this time.”

Local Sinn Fein councillor, Sean McGlinchey said he understood it was an eagle-eyed member of the public who reported the matter. He urged anyone with information to give it to the PSNI.

“People need to realise these derelict buildings must be left alone, as there are issues for public safety,” he said, adding: “As always, I would urge all parents to know where their children are at all times.”

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact Limavady Police Station on 0845 600 8000, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
