Creggan man jailed for assaults on couple

A 23-year-old man who assaulted a man and his girlfriend in front of the couple’s child has been jailed for four months.

David Gerard McCloskey, whose address was given as Creggan Heights, pleaded guilty to two charges of common assault on September 21, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard McCloskey had a verbal altercation with the couple in the city centre. A short time later, he ran up behind the couple near Quayside Shopping Centre and hit the man several times on the back of the head with an object. The 23-year-old called the injured party a “hun” and “scum”.

The court was told the injured party’s girlfriend intervened and McCloskey grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against railings.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that his client “thought they had been making threats against him” but now accepts “that is entirely false”.
