A warning has been issued for local businesses to be vigilant after several attempts were made at extortion.

Police said a number of businesses across the north have been targeted by online criminals over recent times.

The PSNI’s Cyber Crime Centre are now advising businesses across the north to be on the alert in case they too fall victim to extortion demands being made by a “known online criminal group”.

Detective Chief Inspector Douglas Grant from the Cyber Crime Centre said; “The ransom demands to date have carried the threat of a cyber attack being inflicted on the company and this attack may take the form of a DDoS attack, Distributed Denial of Services, which may disrupt or shut down company web services or networks.”

The PSNI said they are already investigating a number of threats in conjunction with partner agencies, and have advised companies that are being targeted to contact the PSNI on 101 or report through the PSNI’s Cyber Internet Reporting Portal on their website.

Those affected are also advised to preserve any e-mail communications and to record the date, time and details of any communications.
