A self-employed mechanic is to stand trial for causing the death of a woman by dangerous driving.

Laurence Michael Conaghan, of 3 Lisfannon Park, is charged with causing the death of Sarah Patricia Duffy on March 12, last year.

The fatal car accident occurred at a pedestrian crossing at Lecky Road flyover as the deceased walked home from Mass.

A large number of the victim’s family were in Derry Magistrates Court for the brief hearing.

Conaghan declined to say anything in answer to the charges or to call any witnesses.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr accepted there is a prima facie case for the 40-year-old to answer.

Conaghan was released on his own bail of £500 to appear at the Crown Court on April 19 for arraignment.

District Judge Barney McElholm asked the victim’s family to accept the condolences of the court and told him they were welcome to attend the next hearing at the Crown Court.
