Police have received several reports of children in Derry using the internet to organise fights.
A PSNI spokeswoman says police are urging parents to take an active interest in their children’s social networking sites after a spike in reports of fights being organised online.
PSNI Neighbourhood Constable Shona Holmes said: “What may start off as an argument between one or two people can quickly escalate and the potential for serious injury cannot be underestimated. Younger children in particular could find themselves being drawn into a situation that is potentially very dangerous.
“We are asking parents to take responsibility and know what their children are up to when they leave the house. Parents need to closely monitor the social media internet sites their children are using and talk to them about the dangers of getting caught up in this sort of dangerous and antisocial behaviour.
“I am urging schools, parents and community groups to help me reinforce this message to our young people. I am also asking anyone with information regarding this type of behaviour to come forward and tell us what you know. The number to call is 0845 600 8000.”
