A man believed to be carrying a knife has robbed a shop in Derry.

Police say the robbery took place at a shop in the Academy Road area of the city shortly before 8:30pm last night (December 22).

“Shortly before 8:30pm, it was reported that a man with his face covered up entered a shop in the area armed with a suspected knife,” a PSNI spokesman said.

“It is believed the man threatened a member of staff and made off with a sum of money. The male made off down the Academy Road area. It is not believed that the member of staff was injured during the incident.”

Sinn Féin Councillor O Hagan said “I urge anyone with information on this robbery to contact the police. Sadly there have been a number of such robberies of small businesses in Derry over the past few weeks”
