A drink driver who was involved in a hit and run was brought back to the scene of the accident by a taxi driver, a court has heard.

Paul Matthew McGinley, of Tranarossan Avenue, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol, failing to report and remain and obstructing police on June 19.

Derry Magistrates Court was told the 24-year-old was involved in a hit and run accident at a roundabout on the Skeoge Road. His car mounted the reservation and struck another vehicle and drove off in the direction of Donegal.

A taxi driver who witnessed the incident followed McGinley’s car and brought him back to the city.

The court heard the 24-year-old was ‘highly intoxicated’ and claimed he had been a passenger in the car.

District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a four month sentence for two years, imposed a 100 hour community service and disqualified him from driving for 15 months.
