SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has called for anyone who witnessed a man being set alight in Derry City centre on Sunday evening to come forward.

Mr Durkan said: “I was horrified when I heard about this evil attack on Sunday evening. I was contacted by a good samaritan whose daughter had actually helped to extinguish the flames that had engulfed this poor man’s legs.

We were able to get care to the victim through the swift actions of the team at Damian House.

“Fortunately, the man was not seriously injured and was probably saved by the fact that he was wearing two pairs of trousers due to the cold.

Police have interviewed the victim and are checking CCTV. I appeal to anybody with any information about this horrific, vile attack to come forward. Whoever is responsible must be apprehended.”
