A man who gave a ‘middle finger gesture’ as an Apprentice Boys parade was taking place has been fined £150.

Jonathan Kohlmeyer, of Liscloon Drive, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on August 9, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the incident occurred in The Diamond area of the city as the annual Apprentice Boys parade was passing.

Defence counsel Nicola Coulter told the court her client wasn’t making the gesture at those taking part in the parade, but towards friends who were outside a bar.

She added Kohlmeyer accepts his behaviour was ‘extremely juvenile’ and could have been misinterpreted by the marchers or their supporters.

Ms Coulter said the 31-year-old has no intentions to come back before the court.

District Judge Barney McElholm said it was a ‘very stupid thing to do’

He added ‘if I thought he had deliberately aimed it at the paraders there would be a much higher penalty’.
