A man who went into an empty house to sleep off alcohol has been fined £100.

Conor James Collins, of Collon Lane, pleaded guilty to wrongfully entering premises on October 12, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police were called by residents in Edenmore Street who saw three men acting suspiciously.

They believed the men were trying to break into an empty property with a large pole.

Collins was found inside the property and was arrested.

The court was told a window was broken and the owner of the property said damage caused to the house was new.

During police interview, 19-year-old Collins claimed he could not go home because he was drunk and only planned to stay in the property to ‘sleep it off’.

Defence solicitor Paddy McGurk said his client wasn’t in the house to steal anything or cause any damage.

Collins was also ordered to pay £200 compensation.
