Derry footballer James McClean has been banned from driving for three months after being caught speeding at 95mph without a full driving licence.

The Sunderland player (23) was also fined £700 at Antrim Magistrate’s Court.

McClean, whose address was given in court as Creggan Heights, had been stopped by police on July 26 last year in his Land Rover on the motorway close to the Rathbeg junction in Antrim.

The former Derry City player was 25mph over the 70mph limit, and 50mph over the limit allowed for a driver holding a provisional licence.

McClean admitted all offences during police interview, the court heard.

His defence team said:”“He is determined to fulfil his role as a role model, which is one upon him whether he accepts that or not. It is very much a harsh lesson learned.”

The footballer was not present at the hearing.
