An attack on a car by in the Fountain area of Derry is being treated as sectarian, the PSNI have said.
A police spokesperson said at about 2.30am on Tuesday (22nd) a group of about eight men in dark hoodies attacked a black Peugeot 206 that was parked in the area. When challenged, they shouted sectarian abuse and made off in the direction of Artillery Street.
SDLP candidate Emmet Doyle condemned the attack. “I am appalled at yet another mindless attack which the police quite rightly describe as a ‘hate crime’ after residents who challenged the attackers in the early hours were subjected to sectarian abuse.
“People right across this city just want to live in peace. Those behind these attacks really need to catch themselves on and do something productive with themselves rather than attempting to stir up trouble,” he said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on the 101 non-emergency number. Alternatively, information can be given to the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
