Hand grenades similar to those used in Manchester police murder - court told

Hand grenades found in a house in Derry are similar to those used in the “high profile murder of two police officers” in Manchester, a court has heard.

The claim was made as 29-year-old Gary McPhillips appeared at the Derry magistrates court via videolink this morning.

McPhillips, of Hawkin Street, is charged with possession of ecstasy and mephedrone with intent to supply.

He is further charged with possession of explosives, firearm and ammunition on December 20, last year.

It is alleged that during a search of the property at Hawkin Street police discovered 755 ecstasy tablets and 310 grams of mephedrone.

A black hand gun, homemade machine gun with a suppressor, a taser, cs gas and a substantial amount of ammunition was also allegedly found.

A bail application made on behalf of McPhillips was adjourned to see when a forensic report will be available.

The 29-year-old will appear in court again via videolink on November 4
