A mother smashed a mirror on a police officer’s hand while her children were being taken into care, Derry Magistrate’s Court has heard.

The 30-year-old from Creggan admitted assaulting the officer and resisting arrest on December 4, 2012. The court heard police and social services personnel entered the house and found the defendant highly intoxicated with her two children. She was acting irrationally and swearing. Following attempts to calm her down, she “reached for” a social worker. When a police officer stepped in she grabbed a mirror off the wall and smashed it against his left hand, causing two cuts, one of which was treated with glue. A defence barrister said she never intended to harm anyone. He said she wanted to give her children a “kiss and a hug”. The barrister said “it was difficult to imagine a more profoundly sad set of circumstances” than those in the probation officer’s report. He said she was “very remorseful” for her actions, adding that she has made positive steps to deal with alcohol addiction. She was given a three month prison sentence which was suspended for 18 months and ordered to participate in an alcohol/drug treatment programme.
